N Methyl 2 Pyrrolidone or NMP or Methylpyrrolidone is used to recover certain hydrocarbons generated in the processing of petrochemicals, such as the recovery of 1,3-butadiene and acetylene. It is used to absorb hydrogen sulfide from sour gas and hydrodesulfurization facilities. Due to its good solvency properties NMP is used to dissolve a wide range of polymers. It is also used as a solvent for surface treatment of textiles, resins, and metal coated plastics or as a paint stripper. It is utilized as a solvent in the commercial preparation of polyphenylene sulfide. In the pharmaceutical industry, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone is used in the formulation for drugs by both oral and transdermal delivery routes.

Bromothymol blue solution: Dissolve 50 mg of bromothymol blue in a mixture of 4 mL of 0.02 M sodium hydroxide and 20 mL of alcohol and dilute with water to 100 mL.
Sample: Methylpyrrolidone (neat)
Analysis: Add 0.5 mL of Bromothymol blue solution as indicator to 50 mL of water and adjust with 0.02 M potassium hydroxide or 0.02 M hydrochloric acid until a yellow color is obtained. Add 50 mL of the Sample. Titrate with 0.02 M hydrochloric acid to the initial coloration.
Acceptance criteria: NMT 8.0 mL of 0.02 M hydrochloric acid is required.

TESTS
Appearance: The substance to be examined is clear and colourless.
Alkalinity: Dissolve 50 mL of the substance to be examined in 50 mL of water previously adjusted with 0.02 M potassium hydroxide or 0.02 M hydrochloric acid until a yellow colour is obtained using 0.5 mL of bromothymol blue solution as indicator. Titrate with 0.02 M hydrochloric acid to the initial coloration. Not more than 8.0 mL of 0.02 M ;hydrochloric acid is required.

Water: Maximum 0.1 per cent, determined on 1.000 g.
