DEFINITION
(3R)-3-Hydroxy-4-(trimethylammonio)butanoate.
Content: 98.0 per cent to 102.0 per cent (anhydrous substance).
CHARACTERS
Appearance: White or almost white, crystalline powder or colourless crystals, hygroscopic.
Solubility: Freely soluble in water, soluble in warm ethanol (96 per cent), practically insoluble in acetone.

C. To 1 mL of solution S add 9 mL of water, 10 ;mL of dilute sulfuric acid and 30 mL of ammonium reineckate solution. A pink precipitate is formed. Allow to stand for 30 min. Filter and wash with water, with ethanol (96 per cent) and then with acetone and dry at 80C. The precipitate melts at 147C to 150C.
TESTS
Solution S: Dissolve 5.00 g in carbon dioxide-free water prepared from distilled water and dilute to 50.0 mL with the same solvent.
Appearance of solution: Solution S is clear and colourless.
pH: 6.5 to 8.5.
Specific optical rotation: -29.0 to -32.0 (anhydrous substance), determined on solution S at 25C.
Related substances: To pass the test.
Chlorides: Maximum 200 ppm.
Sulfates: Maximum 300 ppm.
Water: Maximum 1.0 per cent, determined on 2.00 g.

DESCRIPTION
L-Carnitine occurs as white crystals or as a white, crystalline, hygroscopic powder. It is freely soluble in water, in alcohol, in alkaline solutions, and in dilute mineral acids. It is practically insoluble in acetone and in ethyl acetate. It decomposes without melting at about 185C to 195C.
Function: Nutrient.
REQUIREMENTS
Identification:
A. Dissolve about 1 g of sample in 10 mL of water and 10 mL of 1 N hydrochloric acid, and add 5 mL of sodium tetraphenylborate. A white precipitate forms.
B. The infrared absorption spectrum of a potassium bromide dispersion of the sample, previously dried in vacuum at 60C for 5 h, exhibits maxima only at the same wavelengths as those of a similar preparation of USP Levocarnitine Reference Standard.
Chloride: Not more than 0.4%.
Lead: Not more than 1 mg/kg.
Optical (Specific) Rotation: [α]D20°: Between –29.0° and −32.0°, calculated on the anhydrous basis.
pH: Between 5.5 and 9.5, in a 1:20 aqueous solution.
Potassium: Not more than 0.2%.
Residue on Ignition: Not more than 0.5%.
Sodium: Not more than 0.1%.
Water: Not more than 4.0%.
