CHARACTERS
Appearance: White or almost white, crystalline powder or colourless crystals.
Solubility: Freely soluble in water, very slightly soluble in ethanol (96 per cent).

D. Dissolve 0.5 g in a mixture of 0.25 mL of hydrochloric acid, 0.5 mL of a 100 g/L solution of sodium nitrite and 1 mL of water. Shake; gas is given off. Add 2 mL of dilute sodium hydroxide solution, followed by 0.25 mL of iodinated potassium iodide solution. After about 30 min, a yellow precipitate is formed.
TESTS
Solution S: Dissolve 2.5 g in distilled water and dilute to 50 mL with the same solvent.
Appearance of solution: The solution is clear and not more intensely coloured than reference solution.
Specific optical rotation: + 13.5 to + 15.5 (dried substance).
Ninhydrin-positive substances: To pass the test.
Chlorides: Maximum 200 ppm.
Sulfates: Maximum 300 ppm.
Ammonium: To pass the test.

DESCRIPTION
L-Alanine occurs as a white crystalline powder. It is freely soluble in water, sparingly soluble in alcohol, and insoluble in ether. The pH of a 1:20 aqueous solution is between 5.5 and 7.0.
Function; Nutrient.
Identification: The infrared absorption spectrum of the sample exhibits relative maxima at the same wavelengths as those of a typical spectrum as shown in the section on Infrared Spectra, using the same test conditions as specified therein.
Assay: Not less than 98.5% and not more than 101.5% of C3H7NO2, calculated on the dried basis.
Lead: Not more than 5 mg/kg.
Loss on Drying: Not more than 0.3%.
Optical (Specific) Rotation: [α]D20°: Between +13.5° and +15.5°, calculated on the dried basis; or [α]D25°: between +13.2° and +15.2°, calculated on the dried basis.
Residue on Ignition: Not more than 0.2%.
