CAS 8002-74-2DEFINITION
Paraffin is a purified mixture of solid saturated hydrocarbons obtained from petroleum. It may contain suitable antioxidants.IDENTIFICATION
A. Infrared Absorption:
Sample: Use a thin film of melted specimen.
Analysis: Ensure complete melting to avoid doublet peaks that may be observed at wavenumbers at about 1460 and 730/cm.
Acceptance criteria: Meets the requirements
B. It meets the requirements in Specific Tests for Congealing Temperature.Limit of Sulfur Compounds:
Sample: 4.0 g
Analysis: To the Sample add 2 mL of dehydrated alcohol, and add 2 drops of a clear saturated solution of lead(II) oxide in sodium hydroxide solution (200 mg/mL). Heat the mixture at 70C for 10 min with frequent shaking, and cool.
Acceptance criteria: No dark brown color develops.
Limit of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons:
To pass the test.
Acceptance criteria: The absorbance at any wavelength in the specified range is not greater than one-third of the absorbance, at 278 nm, of the Standard solution.
Congealing Temperature: 47C –65C
Acidity:
Sample: 15 g
Analysis: Introduce the Sample into a suitable separator, add 30 mL of boiling water, and shake vigorously for about 1 min. Allow to cool, and draw off the separated water. To 10 mL of the filtrated aqueous layer add 0.1 mL of phenolphthalein.
Acceptance criteria: The solution does not produce a pink color. NMT 1.0 mL of 0.01 M sodium hydroxide is subsequently required to change the color of the indicator to pink.
Alkalinity:
Sample: 10 mL of the filtrated aqueous layer obtained from the test for Acidity
Analysis: To the Sample add 0.1 mL of methyl red.
Acceptance criteria: The solution produces a yellow color. NMT 0.5 mL of 0.01 M hydrochloric acid is subsequently required to change the color of the indicator to red.
Readily Carbonizable Substances:
To pass the test.
Packaging and Storage: Preserve in light resistant, well-closed containers, and avoid exposure to excessive heat.
Labeling: Label it to indicate the name and quantity of any antioxidants.
Specifications of Hard Paraffin BP Ph Eur Grade:
DEFINITION
A purified mixture of solid saturated hydrocarbons generally obtained from petroleum. It may contain a suitable antioxidant.CHARACTERS
Appearance: Colourless or white or almost white mass; the melted substance is free from fluorescence in daylight.
Solubility: Practically insoluble in water, freely soluble in methylene chloride, practically insoluble in ethanol (96 per cent).IDENTIFICATION
First identification: A, C
Second identification: B, C
A. Infrared absorption spectrophotometry.
Comparison hard paraffin CRS.
B. Acidity or alkalinity (see Tests).
C. Melting point: 50C to 61C.TESTS
Acidity or alkalinity: To 15 g add 30 mL of boiling water and shake vigorously for 1 min. Allow to cool and to separate. To 10 mL of the aqueous layer add 0.1 mL of phenolphthalein solution. The solution is colourless. Not more than 1.0 mL of 0.01 M sodium hydroxide is required to change the colour of the indicator to red. To a further 10 mL of the aqueous layer add 0.1 mL of methyl red solution. The solution is yellow. Not more than 0.5 mL of 0.01 M hydrochloric acid is required to change the colour of the indicator to red.
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: Use reagents for ultraviolet absorption spectrophotometry. Dissolve 0.50 g in 25 mL of heptane and place in a 125 mL separating funnel with unlubricated ground-glass parts (stopper, stopcock). Add 5.0 mL of dimethyl sulfoxide. Shake vigorously for 1 min and allow to stand until 2 clear layers are formed. Transfer the lower layer to a 2nd separating funnel, add 2 mL of heptane and shake the mixture vigorously. Allow to stand until 2 clear layers are formed. Separate the lower layer and measure its absorbance between 265 nm and 420 nm using as the compensation liquid the clear lower layer obtained by vigorously shaking 5.0 mL of dimethyl sulfoxide with 25 mL of heptane for 1 min. Prepare a 7.0 mg/L reference solution of naphthalene in dimethyl sulfoxide and measure the absorbance of this solution at the absorption maximum at 278 nm using dimethyl sulfoxide as the compensation liquid. At wavelengths from 265 nm to 420 nm, the absorbance of the test solution is not greater than one-third that of the reference solution at 278 nm.
Sulfates: Maximum 150 ppm.STORAGE: Protected from light.
We also supply Paraffin Hard EP Grade.

CAS: Hydrotreated Paraffin Wax CAS 64742-51-4
CAS: Hydrotreated Microcrystalline Wax CAS 64742-60-5
CAS: Microcrystalline Wax CAS 63231-60-7DESCRIPTION
Petroleum Wax occurs as a translucent wax that ranges in color from amber to almost white. It is a refined mixture of solid hydrocarbons, paraffinic in nature, obtained from petroleum. It may be prepared as ‘‘refined paraffin wax’’ or as ‘‘refined microcrystalline wax.’’ The refined paraffin wax is usually obtained from a lower-molecular-weight fraction of petroleum and has lower viscosities when molten than the refined microcrystalline wax. The refined microcrystalline wax is usually higher in molecular weight, in flash point, and in melting point than the refined paraffin wax. These waxes are graded and sold according to color and to melting point, which ranges from about 48C to 102C. They exhibit low solubility in organic solvents, but they are most soluble in aromatic hydrocarbons and least soluble in ketones, in esters, and in alcohols.
Function: Masticatory substance in chewing gum base; protective coating; defoaming agent; microcapsules for spices and flavoring agents.REQUIREMENTS
Identification: The infrared absorption spectrum of a melted sample on a potassium bromide plate exhibits maxima only at the same wavelengths as those of a typical spectrum as shown in the section on Infrared Spectra, using the same test conditions as specified therein.
Lead: Not more than 1 mg/kg.
Ultraviolet Absorbance: (polynuclear hydrocarbons) 280 to 289 nm: Not more than 0.15; 290 to 299 nm: Not more than 0.12; 300 to 359 nm: Not more than 0.08; 360 to 400 nm: Not more than 0.02.
The following additional specifications, where applicable, should conform to the representations of the vendor: Color, Melting Point, and Odor.TESTS
